Birthing, Bonding & Breastfeeding Presents Certified Lactation Educator Training

The three-day intensive lactation training fulfills the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative and US Core Competencies requirements. It is a wonderful refresher course and a valuable training for anyone working with moms and babies. Nurses often take the course to gain lactation knowledge while earning 24 Continuing Education Units. The three-day training provides an excellent overview of lactation and supplies the education and training a Lactation Educator or Peer Counselor should receive.

This interactive training stresses counseling and educating families on the importance of breastfeeding. Class participants enjoy role-playing, exposure to excellent resources and practical application. This course gives an overview of the following:

• Goals & Roles of the Lactation Educator
• Historical Views of Breastfeeding
• Anatomical, Physiological & Hormonal Aspects of Lactation
• Risks of Formula Feeding
• Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding
• Breastfeeding in the Hospital and at Home
• Maternal/Infant Challenges
• When and Who to Refer Breastfeeding Moms to for Additional Help

Christy Jo brings over 20 years teaching experience to the classroom. She has a passion for education and helping others reach their goals. She created the Grow Our Own Lactation Consultant/IBCLC Prep Course (which has been instrumental in training hundreds of new IBCLCs), and has received the Presidential Volunteer Award, Who’s Who among Teachers Award, Phyllis Klaus Award for Promoting the Infant/Parent Bond from DONA International and the ABBEY (Above and Beyond) from Riverside County. Christy Jo is a member of Breastfeeding Coalitions, DONA, CAPPA, DASC, La Leche League, LactSpeak, and is a registered Ambassador for WIC.

Bill Gates Scholarship

Eligibility:

Gates' non-profit organization is giving away 1,000 scholarships for the 2012 school season. Bill Gates' Millennium Scholarship Program (GMS) will select 1,000 talented students next year to receive a good-through-graduation scholarship to use at any college or university of their choice. Scholars will also be provided with personal and professional development through their leadership programs along with academic support throughout their college career.
The program, funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, was established to provide outstanding low income minority students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education in any area of interest. To date, the program has given scholarships to more than 15,000 students. Continuing scholars may request funding for a graduate degree program in one of the following disciplines: education engineering, library science, mathematics, public health or science
