HBO: The Weight of the Nation

 

The Weight of the Nation comprises four documentary films, a three-part

HBO Family series, 14 bonus shorts, a social media campaign, a book published by St. Martin’s Press and a nationwide community-based outreach campaign to support the initiative.

The four-part series debuts Monday, May 14 and Tuesday, May 15, on HBO, with two films airing back-to-back each night. The three-part HBO Family series debuts

Wednesday, May 16.

The Weight of the Nation – 3 main HBO channel, multiplex channels, HBO On Demand, HBO GO and more. All films will also stream free of charge on HBO.com, as well as on multiple platforms by participating television service providers.

Three years in the making, The Weight of the Nation spotlights the facts and myths of this urgent public health issue, showing how obesity affects the health of the nation and cripples the health care system. Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and arthritis are just a few of the diseases directly linked to obesity and will dramatically increase if the status quo does not change.  Like many other public health problems, overweight and obesity have disproportionate impacts on disadvantaged communities and racial and ethnic minorities.

Nine of the 10 states with the highest obesity prevalence are also among the poorest.

Americans are eating too much and too often, and not getting enough physical activity. Less healthy foods, such as soda, chips and candy, have become relatively less expensive, while more nutritious foods like fruits and vegetables have become relatively more expensive. What’s more, access to healthy food is a challenge for many communities. Compounding the problem are strong societal forces compelling people to eat more and move less.

Los Angeles Philharmonic FREE Community Concerts

Los Angeles Philharmonic Performs Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 at CAAM

The Los Angeles Philharmonic, conducted by Dudamel Fellow Courtney Lewis, is offering a free neighborhood concert at the California African American Museum (CAAM), 600 State Drive-Exposition Park, Los Angeles, CA 90037 on Friday, March 16^th at 7:30 p.m., performing Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5.

This concert is free and tickets are not required. CAAM’s doors and galleries open at 6:45 p.m. Seats are expected to fill up quickly and RSVPs are strongly encouraged. Music in the Chambers at Culver City City Hall

Members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic will give a free neighborhood chamber music concert on Thursday, March 22^nd at 7 p.m. at Culver City City Hall-Mike Balkman Council Chambers located at 9770 Culver Boulevard, Culver City, CA 90232 as part of the Music in the Chambers series presented by the City of Culver City and the LA Philharmonic.

The concert will feature a string quartet led by LA Philharmonic violinist Robert Vijay Gupta, performing with Jin-Shan Dai, violin; Ben Ullery, viola; and Jonathan Karoly, cello. The program includes Joseph Haydn’s String Quartet Op. 77 No. 1; Anton Webern’s String Quartet Op. 28 and Ludwig van Beethoven’s String Quartet Op. 74 "Harp." A question-and-answer session with the musicians will follow the performance.

Neighborhood Brass Quintet Concert for Masters in the Chapel Series at First Lutheran Church of Venice

Members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic – James Wilt, trumpet; Christopher Still, trumpet; Eric Overholt, horn; James Miller, trombone; and Norman Pearson, tuba - will perform a free neighborhood brass quintet concert at the First Lutheran Church of Venice located at 815 Venice Boulevard, CA 90291 on Friday, April 27^th at 7:30 p.m.

Neighborhood Chamber Music Concert at St. Thomas the Apostle Church

Members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic will perform a free neighborhood chamber music concert at St. Thomas The Apostle Church located at 2727 W. Pico Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90006 on Monday, May 14^th at 8 p.m.

Birthing, Bonding & Breastfeeding Presents Certified Lactation Educator Training

The three-day intensive lactation training fulfills the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative and US Core Competencies requirements. It is a wonderful refresher course and a valuable training for anyone working with moms and babies. Nurses often take the course to gain lactation knowledge while earning 24 Continuing Education Units. The three-day training provides an excellent overview of lactation and supplies the education and training a Lactation Educator or Peer Counselor should receive.

This interactive training stresses counseling and educating families on the importance of breastfeeding. Class participants enjoy role-playing, exposure to excellent resources and practical application. This course gives an overview of the following:

• Goals & Roles of the Lactation Educator

• Historical Views of Breastfeeding

• Anatomical, Physiological & Hormonal Aspects of Lactation

• Risks of Formula Feeding

• Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding

Bill Gates Scholarship

Eligibility:

Gates' non-profit organization is giving away 1,000 scholarships for the 2012 school season. Bill Gates' Millennium Scholarship Program (GMS) will select 1,000 talented students next year to receive a good-through-graduation scholarship to use at any college or university of their choice. Scholars will also be provided with personal and professional development through their leadership programs along with academic support throughout their college career.

The program, funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, was established to provide outstanding low income minority students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education in any area of interest. To date, the program has given scholarships to more than 15,000 students. Continuing scholars may request funding for a graduate degree program in one of the following disciplines: education engineering, library science, mathematics, public health or science

The recall includes “phil&teds model EX explorer” and “phil&teds model HH hammerhead” (check the sticker on the stroller’s real axle bar) sold from August 2010 through June 2011. The serial numbers run consecutively with the month and year, followed by the unit number. Affected serial numbers: 0610/0001 to 0111/4788.

First Black Family Celebration

The sun was shining on another beautiful day for another beautiful event that brought together men, women and children of all ages. At Van Ness Park, the First Black Family Celebration was underway, and the first thing you notice once you enter the park are the smiling faces of volunteers and patrons. The Los Angeles Galaxy and the Kings were represented and gave the children a chance to show off their athletic skills at both stations. Children were able to shoot a puck and kick a soccer ball. There was even a raffle for tickets to a Los Angeles Galaxy Soccer game at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, and plenty of other give-aways at both stations. Inside the gymnasium there was a basketball game set up for the toddlers that were in attendance as well.
