Please join me, the Federal Department of Transportation and the Small Business Administration for our "Small Business Day 2011", July 21st, at FAME Assistance Corporation.  My most important job right now is helping getting people back to work, and small businesses are key to that.  We are joining with 16 Federal, State, County and City of Los Angeles Departments to aid in this effort.

The goal of our Small Business Day is to aid small business and minority contractors by making sure they are aware of upcoming public projects for our highways, the airport, and the ports.  The Small Business Day will also help you be more competitive by helping you get bonding, and linking you to small business loan programs available through DOT.  Additionally, we are requesting that if you have a data base of contractors who want to attend these workshops that you would forward this email to them so that they may have an opportunity to take advantage of these trainings.

Do Babies Learn Vocabulary From Baby Media? Study Says No

We all want our children to be smart. Why else would parents spend millions of dollars on videos and DVDS designed and marketed specifically for infants and young children every year? But do they work? NBC’s ‘Today’ show recently suggested that claims from the manufacturers of baby media products may be overblown, and now a new study published in Psychological Science presents empirical evidence that infants who watched an unidentified baby video did not actually learn the words that the video purported to teach.

The researchers, led by Judy S. DeLoache of the University of Virginia, recruited 96 families with children between 12 and 18 months of age to participate in a month-long study. Some children watched a best-selling infant-learning DVD several times a week, half of them watching alone and half with a parent. Another group had no exposure to the DVD, but their parents were asked to try to teach them the words from the DVD in everyday interactions.
Before and after the month of vocabulary work, all of the children were tested on their knowledge of a list of words that appeared in the DVD.

This program is designed to promote equity in holistic health outcomes and research involvement by (1) teaching stress reduction techniques and coping skills over the radio (2) creating awareness of chronic disease risk reduction and prevention strategies in the community and (3) cultivating trust and interest in Community-Partnered Participatory Research. We invite Community-based Pastors, Spiritual Leaders, Healthcare Professionals, Academic Researchers and Community Members to share valuable, personal, professional, health and research information. Naps

The Importance of Naps

Nap. It's a small word, but for most parents a hugely important one. Why? Sleep is a major requirement for good health, and for young kids to get enough of it, some daytime sleep is usually needed. Crucial physical and mental development occurs in early childhood, and naps provide much-needed downtime for growth and rejuvenation.

Naps also help keep kids from becoming overtired, which not only takes a toll on their moods but may also make it harder for them to fall asleep at night. And naptime gives parents a brief oasis during the day and time to tackle household chores or just unwind.

Medicare Patients Left Lacking Key Treatment

As a gout patient, I can personally attest to the excruciating pain caused by gout, a painful form of arthritis. For those who are unfamiliar with the disease, a simple Google Images search of the word “gout” will speak volumes on just how unpleasant the disease can be.

This is why I was alarmed by the recent news that thousands of gout-suffering seniors in California who are enrolled in Part-D Medicare plans are currently unable to access colchicine, a drug used by gout patients to treat flare-ups of the disease. 

The problem stems from a commendable regulatory action recently taken by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in which the agency removed untested and unapproved versions of colchicine from the marketplace in order to protect patients from potentially harmful side effects. The FDA reports that dozens of deaths have been associated with unapproved colchicine. The good news is that there is an FDA-approved version available.
